Throughout the world,
more than 500.000 mothers die every year during delivery. This is mainly caused by problems occured during pregnancy or at the delivery, which is often carried out without medical assistance.
In the countries ot Subsaharian Africa the situation is particularly alarming: 1/16 mother (6%) risks her life during pregnancy or delivery; in industrialised countries, the rate is 1/3.800 (0.02%) (Source: Unicef).
This situation is caused by lack of sanitary facilities and personnel, high costs of medical assistance, early pregnancies, lack of assistance at the delivery. The consequences are dramatic: mother and babies risk serious complications which can provoke disabilities of the child, infections, death.
Many problems and deseases could be avoided if mothers had the possibility of being assisted during pregnancy, at the delivery and after the birth of their baby.
For this reason, World Friends has created the new Maternity Department of the Ruaraka Uhai Neema Hospital in Nairobi: the department will be able to accept every year 2000 mothers with their babies and will guarantee medical assistance before, during and after delivery.
Pregnant women coming from the slums will have access to the following services:
- antenatal clinic (5 visits e 2 ecographies)
- MCHC
- In patient department
- medical assistance to delivery and follow-up visits
- vaccinations
