Neema Project

The Neema Hospital for the Nairobi shanty towns

In Nairobi, Kenya, World Friends has built the Ruaraka Uhai Neema Hospital, a multifunctional health centre guaranteeing free access to health services for the poorest patients in the city, and to promote health education for the population and the training of local medical and paramedical personnel.

Why Nairobi>>>

Now in operation:

“Neema" in Kiswahili means “human work and God’s blessing”.
Every month World Friends staff at Neema Hospital assist around 5000 people!

The second phase of the project: Maternity Department

The second phase of the Neema project began with the campaign "Born in the right place", launched in October 2009, with its aim to build the Maternity Department in the Neema Hospital to offer primary prenatal and postnatal care to mothers and babies in the shanty towns.
World Friends has already completed the building of the Maternity Department and has provided the equipment and necessary organizational structures. The opening ceremony took place on 18 February 2011.

Still to be built at Neema Hospital:
Following the opening of the Maternity Department, work will begin on building other Departments: General Surgery and Ortho-trauma, Paediatrics, Burns Unit, Centre for Training and Formation for local medical-health personnel and Morgue.

What we have done

Building of the first phase of the hospital is completed. The construction of the health centre officially started on the 23rd of January 2007, with the "Ground Breaking" Ceremony. On the 29th of november 2008 the Opening Ceremony was held at Ruaraka site, where Neema Hospital rises.
The five main blocks (OPD, Casualty, MCH, Laboratory and Administration) are ready, as well as the consultation rooms and diagnostic services.
At the beginning of 2009 the Centre has started to accept patients, and their number is rapidly increasing.

The next step
will be the construction, equipment and implementation of the services of the Maternity department. In October 2009 World Friends has launched a fund raising campaign called "Nati nel posto giusto" ("Born in the right place"): the goal is to finish the construction and equipe the Maternity department within the end of 2010.
