Dal 2011 World Friends sostiene il Reparto di chirurgia dell’ospedale di Chake Chake, nell’isola di Pemba (arcipelago di Zanzibar, Tanzania).

Since 2011, World Friends has supported the Surgery Department at the Chake Chake hospital, on the island of Pemba (Zanzibar archipelago, Tanzania)
World Friends involvement is multiple:
- Making available to projects its experience in the medical field, particularly surgery
- Guaranteeing one mission, once a year, of at least one week’s duration, from an expert surgeon to carry out supervisory duties, to check on the contingent needs and to assist the local surgeon in his work
- Contributing to research on instrumentation and consumable deficiency at the hospital
- Contributing to costs to support the local surgeon
The project was created from the partnership between World Friends and the Ivo de Carneri Foundation, which has supported the department in recent years by sending Italian surgeons to the hospital.
From 2010, thanks to the presence of Dr. Shabaan Issa, the surgery department at Chake Chake has been able to meet the needs of the population in the district of reference, and even more.
Our aim is to support the Surgery Department until 2014, the year in which a doctor who has been sent on a Medical and Surgery degree course in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania’s capital city), funded by a scholarship from the Ivo de Carneri Foundation, will take up his duties in the role of head surgeon.
The Ivo de Carneri Foundation is a non-governative organization (NGO) also recognized by the Italian Ministry of Health. It promotes studies and research in the field of communicable and parasitic diseases and gives support to plans for the control of these diseases in developing countries through the provision of health structures, in collaboration with the governments of the beneficiary countries. It has been operating for some time in Tanzania, aimed at improving the national health service, in cooperation with the Zanzibar Health Ministry.
