World Friends's appeal for post election emergency
Where
: Nairobi, Slums of Baba Dogo, Huruma, Kariobangi, Eastleigh/Mathare, Korogocho (North East area), Kibera (South West area).
Why
: Post-election violence in several parts of Kenya has left close to 1000 people dead, thousands injured and hundreds of thousands displaced and homeless. The slums of Nairobi have been badly affected by the violence:
homes have been destroyed, burnt or looted, and hundreds of families are now living in police stations, churches and schools, many of them with nothing left.
Shops, markets and vehicles have also been destroyed, leaving thousands of entrepreneurs and their employees with no source of income.
The insecurity has led to lack of food and medicines. Prices have shot up by up to 50 per cent.
The long-term psychological impact on children is a concern. Many children have witnessed violence, have been forced from their homes and face an uncertain future.
World Friends program to support people after the violence:
-
free
medical care in WF' s dispensaries in the slums and at Mbagathi Hospital
- psychological support to people who have suffered violence, especially women and children
- psychological support and counselling in 50 schools in the slums of Nairobi
- financial support to families, giving priority to single mothers and orphans
