On 12 September 2011 the new Maternity Department of the Ruaraka Uhai Neema Hospital has become fully operational. At 12.05 in the operating theatre the first baby girl was born with a caesarean section.
Her mother had had many difficulties with her previous pregnancies: she had some serious problems but she couldn't afford medical assistance, and for this reason she had had two misscarriages.
But this time things went on differently: as soon as she heard about the Neema Hospital, she checked in for the visits and she was able to give birth to her baby with all the assistance needed. The girl was named
Patient Neema ("Neema" means "God's blessing" in Kiswahili): she is a beautiful healthy baby of kg. 3,004, and after a few days in the incubator (following the post-caesarean procedure) she has been sent home.
The birth of Patient Neema and the joy of her parents have given great energy to all the staff of the Maternity department! The staff is composed of gynecologist, surgeon, anaesthetist, pediatrician, matron, ecographist, midwives, nurses and paramedics. The department has 24 beds, in the first week of activity 8 babies were born: 5 with natural delivery, 3 with a caesarean section.
With the opening of the operating theatre at the Neema Hospital is now possible to carry out surgery, which until now has been carried out by World Friends staff at the Mbagathi District Hospital in Nairobi.
