Our Staff in Nairobi: stories from the field

   Salome's Story

I am a young lady of 24, full of life and interests. I was born in the central province of Kenyan highlands, just below Mount Kenya, but I am now living in Nairobi Eastlands area, some place near the famous Korogocho slum.
To be sincere, working as a social worker was not my dream as a child. I wanted to be a presenter, I would spend hours in front of the mirror trying messages and faces. But when I finished high school my father lost his job and I had to renounce to university.
I started volunteering in an orphan centre in the slums, where I met the team of Education for life. I was moved by their values, like teamwork, solidarity and the passion for working with young people. When they asked me to join the team I was so happy. I started to work with them and I was given an opportunity to study.  It was not easy to study and work at the same time, but I couldn’t spoil my opportunity. I graduated last November.
Now I am a counsellor, and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. Our slogan is “My life, my responsibility”. I love what I do, I can do it 24hours a day, 7 days a week, 31 day a month and of course 365 days a year!
My public now are my children!
